The Jungle Book KIDS

Directed by Kelsey Sullivan Baldwin

The jungle is jumpin' with a jazzy beat in Disney's The Jungle Book KIDS. Specially adapted from the classic Disney animated film, Disney's The Jungle Book KIDS features a host of colorful characters and your favorite songs from the movie.

Banished by the ferocious tiger, Shere Khan, a human boy named Mowgli and his panther friend, Bagheera, are on the run in the deepest parts of the jungle. On their journey, the two meet a sinister snake named Kaa, a herd of elephants and a giant bear named Baloo, who teaches them the swingin' musical rhythms of the jungle. After surviving a dangerous encounter with a band of monkeys led by King Louie, Mowgli and Bagheera are forced to run for their lives. When Shere Khan returns, our heroes must rally their fellow animals into battle and restore peace throughout the jungle.

Characters:

Mowgli - A boy who gets along with everyone and who is very likable. He has a joyful and curious nature, and a twinkle in his eye. Can be played by a boy or girl.

Bagheera - The panther who acts like an older brother or sister to Mowgli.

Baloo - The bear who provides much of the comedic relief in the story, so the actor must possess a natural sense of comedy. Baloo's part in "I Wan'na Be Like You" demands a singer with a strong sense of rhythm.

Kaa - The snake who supplies threat and danger to Mowgli's journey out of the jungle. Played by six actors - one who is the “head” and five other who provide backing vocals and movement of the body.

Shere Khan - The tiger, is King of the Jungle. He is the villain and the story depends on a good villain.

Colonel Hathi - The elephant, is in charge of the elephant brigade, but is also a little forgetful. He is good at giving commands but doesn't really understand what's going on around him.

The Elephant Troupe - A brigade of elephants (at least 8 actors). Must physicalize the behavior of elephants and march in and out of formation.

Baby Elephant - Sings a solo line in the elephant’s song as well as marching alone amongst the elephants.

King Louie - King of the Monkeys. Must have strong comedic timing and good singing ability. Shouldn’t be afraid to act like a monkey!

Old Monkey - The oldest of the monkey group; shouldn’t be afraid to act as if he/she is an elderly and wise monkey.

Monkeys - Strong dancers and singers featured in "I Wan'na Be Like You.”

Jungle Chorus - The ensemble of singers, actors and dancers. A group of prickly pears, vultures, wolves, etc., who will be in most songs and soloists will be chosen from this group.

Shanti - The girl who takes Mowgli to the village at the end of the story; she is hiding in the jungle the entire time disguised as a Coconut Tree. She should exude sweetness and kindness and sings solos as the Coconut Tree.

Shanti’s Family - Is not seen, but represented by offstage voices in the finale of the show.
